Hi there! I’m Jenni – the 20-something gal behind this Wisconsin (dairy free) food blog. I’m a Badger fan, a registered dietitian, a runner, a not-so-flexible yogi, and most importantly – a food lover.
Loving food has always been easy for me. I grew up with a mother who knows her way around a kitchen. I married a man who is an adventurous eater. I lived in cities with wonderful restaurants. I ate whatever the heck I wanted for over 20 years (in moderation, of course).
In the fall of 2013, I started getting sick. With the help of my doc and some intensive food journaling, we figured out the culprit – dairy. This was devastating to me – I loved Greek yogurt, cheese, butter, cheese, ice cream, and cheese. A Wisconsinite that can’t have cheese is so wrong.
I’m learning to adapt to this new dairy free life. There are substitutes out there that make things a bit easier – soy ice cream, dairy free butter substitutes, and dark or dairy free chocolate. But there are some things that I’ve found irreplaceable – cheese, cheese, cheese. I don’t think I will ever stop craving cheese, but I’m trying to focus on the foods that I can still enjoy.
I’ve got Mike, my husband, and our two dogs who help me behind-the-scenes. Mike is the taste-tester and dish-washer behind DSD. And the dogs? They clean up all my floor spills. Ripley, our oldest pup is a Japanese Chin & Pekingese mix that weighs 12 pounds dripping wet. Wallaby, or WallaBeast, is an Australian Cattle Dog & lab mix that weighs in at a hefty 70 pounds. These three gents complete me.
What you’ll find here are dishes that are easy enough for everyone to tackle. I have a strange mix of healthy foods, decadent sweets, and an ever-growing number of dairy-free recipes. Good food isn’t difficult – it just takes a little patience and a lot of love. I hope you come back often to see what we’re up to.
